After the flexible packaging was successfully developed, the polyurethane adhesive became the main supporting material in this field because of its advantages of flexibility, hygienicness, adhesiveness to various materials, low temperature resistance, and ease of handling. However, with the rapid, extensive, and extensive use of flexible packaging, their performance in environmental protection, health, and safety has been included in research.
The adhesives used in the flexible packaging industry, on the one hand, are replacing traditional methods of welding, riveting, nailing, splicing, and bolting with their advantages of convenience, speed, and efficiency. On the other hand, it is precisely because of its wide range of advantages. A great deal of use has caused more discussion on the environment, health and safety.
Currently, the focus of the discussion is on solvents in solvent adhesives. The prevailing view is that solvents are harmful to the environment and dangerous. The government is required to make regulations to limit its use. For example, the requirements for the control of VOC (organic volatiles) content, and the regulations for HAP (harmful air pollutants) emissions. Under this requirement, “green†and “environmentally friendly†products such as solvent-free, water-based, hot-melt adhesives, and UV/e-curable products were developed to replace traditional solvent-based products.
However, from the current market perspective, the promotion of solvent-free, water-based products has encountered many obstacles, and solvent-based adhesives are still developing. There are many reasons for this. How should we look at this issue?
Hot melt adhesives and solvent-free products require more heat energy during production and use. Water-based products also require large amounts of heat during production and use. How much fuel does the water-based product consume and how much CO2 it generates for each kilogram of adhesive used? And other pollutants. Sometimes this kind of consumption of the environment just shifts from one place to another, and one kind of resource turns into another kind of resource. Increasing the cost is still only partial transfer; at the same time, this kind of transfer also means that the previous process and equipment were abandoned and new. The requirements of the process equipment, which in turn form a large waste of resources. Monomers and additives in these adhesives pose new threats. For example, benzenes and partially halogenated hydrocarbons have been proven to have a greater toxic effect and are strictly prohibited for use abroad. However, China only makes clear requirements for the solvents used in luggage, interior decoration and decoration, and there are no corresponding regulations in the packaging industry. The component glue is still being used. These single-group adhesives are generally rubber-based solubilizers. In addition to the environmental pollution and toxic effects of benzenes, there are also a large number of toxicity problems of the additives, which have proved to be unusable for food packaging. Ester-soluble polyurethane adhesives have passed strict FDA certification and have proven to be healthy and safe after long-term use. Domestic and foreign research and application of alcohol-soluble polyurethane adhesives have been applied, but there is no report on the sanitation of cosolvents and other additives.
Globally, there is still a difference in understanding of the same solvent. Some solvents were included in the VOC Control List product in Europe but were not included in the United States. For example, acetone, because the United States believes that acetone is a naturally occurring product like CO2.
All chemicals, whether solvent or other types of products, should be treated with a sense of common sense. Like other products such as electricity and medicine, they should be controlled and managed so that they do not endanger health and life and damage the environment. It cannot be completely denied because of its side effects. For solvent-based two-component polyurethane adhesives, it is still of great significance to study new products that meet new requirements and reduce solvent content and use in operation.
Regardless of solvent type or non-solvent type, whether it can meet the requirements of product use is still the bottom line of the product, and this is also an obstacle to the failure of many ester-soluble two-component adhesives to fail to surpass. Many companies caught up with the HSE bus. They purchased new equipment to meet the requirements of these alternatives, but found that several varieties have been developed are difficult to meet customer requirements, the glue is difficult to apply, the coating status is not good, the composite film strength is low, Tolerant to temperature, humidity, etc., the final equipment had to be half-opened or simply stopped working. In this regard, researchers still need to invest in improving their operational availability and performance stability.
