Foreign polyethylene naphthalate development status and trends (1)

Polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) is mainly produced by polycondensation of dimethyl naphthalate (NDC) and ethylene glycol (EG). Due to its high barrier properties, water resistance, airtightness, UV resistance, better heat resistance, chemical resistance, and radiation resistance, it has caused widespread concern among polyester manufacturers around the world in recent years.

At present, the world's industrialized production NDC manufacturers are mainly Amoco (Amoco) and Mitsubishi Gas (Japan). Amoco is the world's first manufacturer to industrialize NDC. The company now has 45,000 tons/year of NDC production bases in Deakent, Alaska and Alabama. Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Corporation is the world’s second-largest NDC manufacturer and currently owns 40,000 t/a NDC units.

There are many manufacturers engaged in R&D and manufacture of PEN, including DuPont, Eastman, Hoechst, Imperial Chemicals, Teijin, Nippon Polyester, Toray, Toyobo, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, Amoco, and Shell. Of these PEN manufacturers, Toray, Shell and other companies are among the world's leaders in PEN development. Toray currently has a 10,000-ton/year homo- and copolymer PEN production capacity in the country, and cooperates with Coca-Cola Company in the United States to provide the company with 100% homopolymeric PEN resin for Coca-Cola beverage bottles.

Imperial Chemical Company had developed PEN resin and its high-grade magnetic recording film products as early as 1975, but due to the high production costs at the time, its application was severely limited and it was difficult to achieve large-scale operations. In recent years, with the maturity of PEN production technology, the company has focused its development on the development of PEN and PET blends and copolymer products.

Nippon Polyester Co., Ltd. currently supplies PEN resin to Listerine and Leminade, two of Japan's bottle makers. Because the product has good heat resistance, the two companies use PEN resin for hot filling and recyclability. Reusable polyester containers.

Shell company in early 1994 to achieve PEN resin - Hipertuf (trade name) of the industrial production, but also responsible for providing NMC monomer to Amoco company. The company has currently developed two high-performance PEN resin products (mainly homo-PEN) that outperform PET and have excellent chemical resistance, gas and ultraviolet light barrier properties, gloss, and heat resistance. All are good, in which Hipertuf 35000 was developed as a low molecular weight resin (viscosity IV = 0.46), which can be used in film and injection products (such as daily necessities, chemicals and medical packaging), and can also be used for blowing medicine and cosmetics. Plastic containers, as well as juice, water, liquor, and beer packaging containers that can be retort-sterilized. In addition, Shell has also developed a copolymer PEN specifically for the manufacture of specialty containers, which is now on the market.

Eastman currently has a 10,000-ton/year PEN resin production facility. PEN products are mainly used for fiber and film products. (to be continued)
