3D Printing Technology Can Reduce Material Consumption by 75% and CO2 Emissions by 40%

The EADS Innovation Workshop (IW), a research and technology organization of the Aerospace and Defense Group, is always looking for new manufacturing methods. A recent goal is Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS).

Developed by EOS, it is used by the EADS IW to create demonstration sections that explore the benefits of optimizing design and production sustainability. Protecting the environment is a key driver, and the cost of manufacturing and operating the aerospace products has also lowered the group's research base.

The quality, cost, and environmental impact of design and manufacturing solutions play an important role in the decision-making process. EADS IW has defined new technology (TRL) standards. The results from the initial joint study were carried out in the morning to assess the aspects of CO2 emissions, energy and raw material efficiency and recycling. When analyzing energy consumption, the company's investigation not only included the production stage, but also the procurement and raw materials, argon consumption DMLS metal powder atomization, transport from the atomized whole waste.

The evaluation by EADS IW highlighted the company, among other things, during the operational phase, the benefits of the redesigned Airbus A320 cabin hinge brackets for the potential cost and sustainability of DMLS.
