Textile industry introduction:

A few days ago, the Kenyan media "Business Daily" published an analysis article saying that due to rising labor costs, the textile and garment industry in Asian countries such as China, South Korea and Singapore is gradually slowing down, which provides opportunities for sub-Saharan African countries to develop textile and garment industries.

The article analyzes the potential advantages of developing textile and garment industry in Kenya: First, trade preferential policies with developed countries make Kenya's exports relatively easy. According to the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) clothing clause, the United States gives preferential market access measures to Kenya’s export of clothing. Second, Kenya has professional talents in design and tailoring, and the clothing designed can be sold in the country or even exported to other markets around the world. Third, Kenya has a better business environment compared to other African countries.

But at the same time, the article lists the disadvantages of Kenya's development of the textile and garment industry: First, the current textile industry is more dispersed and there is no mature industrial chain. It is reflected in the lack of necessary links between production and sales. Second, there are many small and micro enterprises, and the added value of products is low, mostly for cottage products. The data shows that there are currently more than 75,000 small and micro enterprises in textile and apparel in Kenya, more than 80% of which are in the informal sector, and the production equipment is also relatively simple.

The textile and apparel companies currently registered in the Kenya Export Processing Zone (EPZ) include: 22 large foreign companies, 170 medium and large companies, 8 ginning plants, 8 spinning mills, 15 weaving and knitting companies, and 9 companies. According to the article, Kenya should make full use of the new model such as the currently planned special economic zone (SEZ) and the time window for the rapid development of transportation infrastructure such as railways and highways, scale up the development of the textile and garment industry, and form a relatively complete industrial chain to promote the Kenyan state.
