The University of Staffordshire in the United Kingdom has developed a new river water detection system that can use river aquatic organisms to detect river water quality.

The distribution and concentration of different chemical substances in the river water will determine the type composition of aquatic organisms in the river. Some aquatic organisms can reproduce rapidly under certain river conditions and may die under another environment, which is determined by different components of the river water. Therefore, as long as the analysis of the type composition of aquatic organisms in rivers can determine what kind of chemical substances exist in a certain river section.
According to the British Environment Agency, monitoring the quality of rivers by observing the health status of livestock and plants can reveal large pollution trends, but it is difficult to identify specific pollutants. The detection system can be used to timely detect whether the river water contains harmful substances such as pesticides, sewage, and heavy metals, helping people to more effectively protect and improve river water quality.
