Modular data center: fast and secret expansion options for sensitive markets

Sensitive market

The containerized data center is a niche market, but it is an important technology for those with tight space. Many industry users have adopted such systems for their sensitive applications, such as data processing centers in the oil extraction process, and some military organizations have purchased such containerized data centers to bring processing capabilities closer to the military front line.

For these reasons, most users do not want to disclose details of their deployments, said David Cappuccio, an infrastructure analyst at market research firm Gartner. He said: "Most people (considering adopting this technology) are in an emergency situation and do not want to talk about details in this respect. So this has been transformed into an emergency solution to some extent."

Cost savings and speed

Cappuccio said that companies usually don't save too much cost when building data centers, and the percentages are usually single digits. It takes 8 to 12 months to build a containerized data center, and 12 to 18 months to build a similar, more permanent data center.

According to Brian Fisher, director of IBM services, IBM has set its sights on this niche city since three years ago. It often compresses data centers into a container-sized space, which can be easily closed and transported to another location. This is IBM The latest data center strategy. Fisher said: "We realize that we can make a data center with similar equipment."

The military is very interested in this kind of mobile data center that can be moved closer to subsequent operations. In addition, the business field is also interested in diverse applications. The oil and gas industry tends to deploy data centers in remote locations where mining is taking place. Movie and animation studios hope to enhance their ability to handle computationally intensive special effects.

IBM's PMDC (Portable Modular Data Centers) has six standard designs, most of which are 20 feet in length, in addition to 40 feet and 53 feet systems. A PMDC with only an infrastructure, 20 feet in length, and no IT hardware starts at about $ 500,000. The fully configured 40-foot container price is between 2 million and 2.5 million US dollars. So far, IBM has shipped less than 200 PMDCs.

Other vendors targeting the niche market of containerized data centers include HP, Dell, Sun and SGI. Last month, HP announced that it will start shipping 20-foot container-type data center POD (Performance Optimized Datacenter).

Gartner analyst Cappiccio said that the latest market target for this technology will be schools that are short on building space. He said: "This is a solid niche city that everyone does not understand."
