Asian Label Industry Innovation

As the old traditions of Asian countries fade away, a new generation of new lifestyles is replacing them. Consumers and government officials are increasingly demanding product hygiene, and almost all products require packaging. This brought innovation to the Asian label industry.
The status quo of the development industry There are two reasons for the booming label industry in Asia: The growth of Asian consumers buying labelled products, and the increased labeling requirements of Western countries for Asian products.
According to statistics, the total number of printing plants in Asia is around 5,000. The conditions for printing in different Asian countries competing for the label market vary widely. Japan is the country with the largest number of printing companies in Asia. The number of domestic printing factories is around 1800, and many of them are small-scale, home-based operations.
In the development of the label industry, China currently occupies a dominant position. According to the president of Chanleled Resources/Maratech, a paper film product supplier in Chicago, USA, “The growth rate of China's label industry is not less than 10%.” This growth is more like a quantitative explosion. Especially in areas where there is no shortage of specialized technologies, such as cigarette box labels, hot stamping is used to prevent counterfeiting, and holograms and complex pattern designs are included.
The dramatic increase in China's label industry is a costly attraction for Japan: China's labor costs are 10 times cheaper than Japan's. And there are many domestic consumer demand. Due to abundant resources and low production costs, China will inevitably continue this growth.
The development of the Asian label industry has made education a decisive factor, and many suppliers have already realized this. In February last year, Avery Dennison established a self-adhesive label processing center in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province, to provide the latest technology in the printing and processing of self-adhesive labels. More than 400 trainers participated in the center.
Among the Southeast Asian countries such as China, the largest processors in the label industry mainly come from the United States or Europe. The specific requirements of many Asian countries are not much different from Western countries. Therefore, the quality standards of products are basically the same as those of the United States and Europe. Gradually mastering the more difficult printing process, perhaps after the birth of new equipment, Asian processors will surprise Western countries.
Printing Technology As many overseas companies have spared no effort to promote, Asian printing industry production capacity has greatly improved. The upgrading of equipment has driven the innovation of printing methods and the label industry is progressing.
However, at the same time, the very popular flexo printing in the US label printing industry has begun to take root in Asian countries and has not been widely adopted. There are many speculations about why flexo printing is so cold in Asia. According to industry analysts, it is mainly due to traditional habits and the surrounding environment.
For example, in China, flexo printing is not as convenient as letterpress printing because it is very problematic in terms of plate making, costly and time-consuming, and it does not have a stable supply network for any industry.
In fact, because of the imperfect supply chain, UV flexo technology has stopped or slowed down in some parts of Asia. Some industry sources believe that in order to speed up the development of flexo and UV flexo printing, Asia must establish supporting flexo facilities and consumables.
In addition, the bulk of the product is also the only reason that hinders the development of flexo printing. In Japan, 80% of printing processes use letterpress because the order of labels is usually small, and flexo printing is more suitable for handling large orders.
In the foreground of flexo printing, people’s interest in flexo printing is slowly increasing, but due to the different needs, this increase has certain difficulties. At present, the flexographic conditions in most Asian countries are not mature, but the future development prospects are more optimistic.
Experts believe that the label industry must control the production cost of the entire flexo label. Once the cost is reduced, the flexo label will have the opportunity to develop substantially. Pressure-sensitive material suppliers such as Avery Dennison and Raflatac have also entered Asian countries such as China and will further help reduce the cost of label printing.
