3D printed imitation robot can crawl and swim underwater
Recently, scientists at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne have developed a 3D printing robot. It is reported that this robot can move in water and on land like a real dragonfly. It is reported that this robot will help researchers better understand how amphibians move and even help improve neuroprosthetic devices for paraplegic patients and amputees. Since the development and design process was based on a Spanish rib called Pleurodeles waltl, EPFL scientists named the robot they created Pleurobot. According to China's 3D printing network, although this is not the first robotic robot robot of EPFL, it is the first robot to fully simulate the three-dimensional motion of the skeleton of the baby fish. To do this, EPFL scientists used X-rays to image the baby fish from the top and sides and track changes in the 64 points on the skeleton during the different movements of the target baby fish in the water and on land. “The way we build Pleurobot is brand new,†said Auke Jan Ijspeert, head of the EPFL research team. “It involves getting the right balance between simplified bone structure and gait that replicates baby fish in three-dimensional conditions.†Pleurobot's bones are 3D printed, the joints are equipped with motors, and their electrical/electrical circuits are even designed and manufactured to mimic the central nervous system. According to reports, although the main body of Pleurobot is made by simulating the skeleton of the baby fish, the scientists have not completely copied it. The "bones" are still less than the real Spanish ribs, because Ijspeert and his team found that they are imitating When the animal moves, it is necessary to do some simplification. They used 27 different motors to make up for the shortcomings of bone simplification. “The movement of animals is a very complex process in nature.†Kostas Karakasilliotis said he designed an early iterative version of Pleurobot. “And modern technology tools like photography, 3D printing, fast calculations, etc. can help us get closer to understanding it and copy it.†For scientists, another important role of Pleurobot is to help them understand the interaction between the electrical stimulation of the spinal cord of the baby fish and its movement. Ijspeert expects that if they can figure out how to replicate this system, future neurological research will gain more insight into similar systems on the human body, such as arms and legs.
