Wang Yunlong from Training Department of China Association for Ten Cooperation: Ten Hearts for Outdoor Coaches

Acting Minister of Training Department of China Mountaineering Association, Head of National Outdoor Safety Education Program Working Group. Wang Yunlong entered the China Mountaineering Association in 2002 and began to engage in outdoor education and training. He has participated in outdoor education training and mountaineering exchanges in countries such as the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Greece, and Africa, and participated in the Olympic torch relay Everest Everest event in 2008. China served as the logistics manager of the base camp.

Dr. Zheng Jinzhou of China Normal University bought the book "Educational Language" very early. He said that in the book, he must have ten hearts in school education and scientific research and he was inspired. At the beginning of last year, I had the privilege of listening to Dr. Cheng’s party class. So I always had an idea to use these ten hearts to talk about the understanding of outdoor teaching.

Khan Academy founder Salman Khan said: "The purpose of education has nothing to do with the rate of progression and test scores. The purpose of education is to help people to reap the fruits of life. The responsibility of education is to tap the potential of people. The mission of education is to enhance people's dignity. ”

American high school students rank 23rd in the world in science and mathematics. In the eyes of Americans, this ranking is undoubtedly frustrating, but in fact, it is too narrow to use it to judge the overall strength of a country. This difference in results is due to differences in education awareness. This is especially true of outdoor education, but whether the trainees can harvest fruit depends largely on the coach’s cultivation.

1, normal heart

To be an outdoor coach first needs a sense of peace. According to investigations, the motivation for coaching is ranked first with a sense of accomplishment. This also reflects the fact that there can be no utilitarianism. To achieve a sense of accomplishment, or the approval of students, this is by no means merely the title of “coach”. If everyone holds illusions, in order to win praise, glorious titles, even the so-called "river status" to face training and teaching work, even if these are obtained, it is only a short-lived, vulnerable, or even evolved into an ugly mask. .

Indeed, teachers who have gained and gained gains in the field of training and education, and who gradually strive to form their own unique teaching style, are the teachers who can sit back and relax and constantly ponder and explore teaching problems. It seems normal to look normal, but it becomes uncommon to do it. More than just a sense of common sense, there is more experience accumulated in the real; more than a common mentality, there will be more than a surpassing and improving. Utilitarianism is inevitable, but it is still less.

2, curiosity

The great scientist Einstein said that I have no special talent. I have only strong curiosity. Curiosity is the driving force behind the exploration of a thing. With curiosity, it is possible for us to open another door.

Outdoor sports have a long history and rapid development. This requires each and every one of our teachers to have a curiosity to explore this knowledge. Coach Zhou Peng had consulted a large amount of data on the invention time of the front teeth of the crampons in 1932 or 1934, compared the original English text and multiple documents, and was finally determined to be 1932. This data may seem irrelevant. It may also be that everyone can't remember it, but it shows his responsible attitude to knowledge. If he is not curious, it is impossible to do so. A riser has four or five holes, each of which has a special purpose. It is necessary to rely on curiosity to understand the role of each hole.

For example, the coaches will probably use PPT to assist in the lectures. However, everyone's PPT can do very different things. No one would naturally do this thing. We all know about hundreds of button functions. Software development now does not require our high IQ, but only our curiosity. The technical divers in our teaching team often have new ideas and software to refresh everyone. The beard is also an example in this respect. From hand-painted topographic maps to plasticine teaching to the current 3D model printing, these are not out of thin air. And drop.

3, self-confidence

Self-confidence is indeed a little cultivated and established. There are more classes, and I feel more and more mature on the stage. Through continuous accumulation, their knowledge, theoretical level and practical ability will be enhanced. There is no shortcut to the road leading to the peak. Everyone will step up and become teachers. However, this process requires self-confidence. Support yourself to go down.

But self-confidence is not blind arrogance. It is based on down-to-earth growth paths.

“Thomas Austrian mountaineer Thomas has a description in his book Life is like Mountaineering: I was able to protect my peak without a single protection because I never thought about how to reach the top when I started. Instead, they only focus on their own next step. Only by grasping and stepping on the next step, they can climb step by step and eventually reach the summit."

This is his "small-step principle". I think this principle is very suitable for coaches to learn from. We must also break down the goals and break them. Do not put all goals on all courses at once, but prepare for one lesson and one lesson. Each knowledge point and every word spoken should be considered well and the teaching level naturally improved. In this process, self-confidence has gradually been established. Self-confidence comes from the successful incentive to solve the problem, comes from accumulated experience, and comes from continuous self-reflection.

Another explanation for self-confidence is to believe in yourself. To be a coach, one must first believe in yourself. If you don't even recognize your class, don't expect the students to recognize. Therefore, if you want to have a strong self-confidence, you must pay more, not blind confidence. But self-confidence is an attitude. As long as you work hard, you will have confidence in your capital. You don't have to look ahead and you don’t have perfect people. As long as you stand on the podium, you are the focus of the stage. If you don’t make mistakes, you can confidently display it. .

4. Responsibility

We often teach our students to be leaders and be responsible. Then do we have coaches who have enough sense of responsibility? The responsibility of coaching is expressed in the rigorous attitude to knowledge, the degree of responsibility to the students and the integrity of the profession.

One minute on stage, ten years off the stage. The phrase that describes the actor also applies to coaches. I remember one time inviting a domestic senior outdoor expert, Sun Haibin, to give a kayak class for an intermediate class. He had been preparing for months before and after, and I was shocked that every picture in the courseware has a reference to the source. Say everything in the sentence. He said either he would not speak or he could not be fooled. The 56-day-a-row Asian man who crossed the Atlantic was so committed to an ordinary teaching. I think this is responsibility.

With a strong sense of responsibility, teachers are likely to be skeptical, and will only dare to be hard-boiled. Through the use of their own wisdom and the experience of others, they can gradually solve problems and bring the teaching level to a new level.

Every point of view and every point of knowledge we spread must be scrutiny. The time during the training period is extremely limited, and after the students finish their studies, they will also spend a lot of time studying and practicing. Imagine that if we teach everyone that there is something wrong, this is a rumor. If there are problems with rope operation and navigation in the wild, the consequences will be disastrous. Magoo often said that students who did not learn will not only have poor teachers. This premise is that you must have enough responsibility to treat the job and career.

5, tolerant

Teaching is a process of continuous innovation. In this process, as a coach, to get in touch with new knowledge and new ideas, one must first digest and then pass it to the trainees in plain language. Then the mistakes are unavoidable. In this case, the tolerant mind mainly refers to the peers and trainees. Coaching in the field of mountaineering is a high-strength job. At the same time, it is necessary to monitor the security while passing on knowledge. In addition, most of our teachers are not from “Cobain” and some mistakes and omissions in lectures are inevitable.

The coaching team must work closely together to complement each other. Problems must not stand by while problems arise, even worse, go to the bottom of the rock, and then “look at jokes,” which all indicate that there is not enough tolerance. Tolerance is a prerequisite for gaining respect from others. With a tolerant mind, we can consider issues from other people's perspectives and positions, and there will be more solutions to the problems. Only everyone is really good.

Treating trainees requires a more tolerant mind. Objectively speaking, the ability of the coaches should generally be higher than that of the trainees. The reason why the trainees did not understand them is to learn. This logical coach must make no mistake. It is normal for the trainees to make mistakes during their studies. To train students who are slow to master, we must be more patient in guiding them. We must not be impatient. We must not ignore them and add evil words. Otherwise, the trainee may lose confidence and the coach also loses opportunities for improvement.

The most important point of NOLS's description of EXPEDITION BEHAVIOR in the outdoor leader's ability is to require tolerance. Tolerance is a virtue, and coaches only have the tolerance to have a broader platform and vision. The so-called teaching expertise depends on your tolerance.

6, careful

It is a blessing that students can meet an attentive coach. The training work is complex and common. As a coach, it is necessary to stand on the podium to give lectures and to accompany the trainees. If you are not careful, you may lose a lot of valuable "teaching points."

The coach's carefulness is mainly reflected in the course and the students. Some of our teaching venues are very simple, but some coaches can also be very exciting. I remember once in the field camp, Laothai took out a bunch of small cards from his backpack to share the harvest; the wonderful courseware of the Mustang had hidden mystery, and a large number of actions and links were carefully designed. Only when the coach can be careful can it be possible to avoid evasive mistakes, from the design of the curriculum, to the preparation of lesson plans, the production of courseware, the arrangement of teaching, the anti-classification after class, and so on, which all reflect the importance of carefulness.

Carefulness is the premise of finding problems. For example, if a trainee is not trained, the possible reasons are: poor hands-on ability, short practice time, and lack of concentration... but it's probably because the coach didn't understand! Is it demonstrated correctly? Is it explained? Is it clear? Mago often spurs us. There are no students who cannot learn, and only poor teachers. I think this is probably lack of enough care, it will lead to the discovery of the root causes of the problem, naturally it will not be resolved.

The ratio of coaches and trainees during the training is basically guaranteed to be around 1:10. It is very difficult for the trainees' guidance to be exhaustive. It all depends on the degree of carefulness. And pay attention to the students' body, emotions, diet, exercise, status, feedback, and so on. The details of success or failure are familiar to everyone, and it can be seen that coaching is a necessary quality. Carefulness is not the same as carefulness. Carefulness does not prevent you from having a rough idea. To be a coach, you have to look at six ways and listen to all directions so that you can manage your strategy.

7, open-minded

Chairman Mao taught us from an early age, humbly making progress, and pride makes people fall behind. Confucius said that three people must have my teacher. How many teachers do you have in a training class for dozens of people? The current level and level of students are very high, and their experience and capabilities are well-known. For example, once a training session, coaches talked about the prevention of poisonous plants and animals, and some students questioned on the spot. They think that there is a more scientific approach to the handling of poisonous snakes. After class, they learned that the trainee is an expert of a hospital. This problem is also not difficult to deal with, that is, there must be an open-mindedness, if other people's authority, open-minded advice is. One can round the field and the second one can improve.

But humility is definitely not a guilty conscience. You talk about the history of mountaineering. Below is a student who has passed Mount Everest. You talk about rock climbing. Below are some of the students who can climb 5.14. Are words ambiguous? No need to. Ambition is an attitude. It is a kind of respect for others' literacy, but it is also self-confidence, not guilty.

To be a qualified coach, you should always study, learn from peers, learn from books, and learn from trainees, but the key is whether you can “head down and start moving.” As long as they are open-minded and learn opportunities, they will continue to discover the strengths and strengths of others. You will also develop the habit of self-examination and improve your abilities through self-cultivation. The authority of the coach is not based on the platform, but rather on an open-minded attitude. Each lesson is treated as a study. Your wings will always be full, and teaching is the same as this. Socrates, a famous philosopher of ancient Greece, was brilliant, but he always said humbly: “The only thing I know is my own ignorance.” Mountaineering outdoor sports is a comprehensive knowledge, a real cross-disciplinary discipline, we recognize The only thing to understand is to get a glimpse of what's inside. Only a modest attitude can make your field wider.

8, perseverance

To be a coach must have a perseverance, which requires long-term investment and commitment. Only in this way can we accumulate knowledge and accumulate experience. A good teaching method and a good lesson plan can only be formed through repeated revision and trial and error. If you encounter problems, you will hide. If you encounter problems, you will not be able to make achievements in teaching.

Learning must be long-lasting, and coaching needs the same attitude. Only by soaking in such an atmosphere for a long time can we constantly improve ourselves. Not to accumulate pace, no more than a thousand miles. Some coaches were interested in speaking a few lessons and found that they were out of stock and were always "cooked up". However, they did not persevere in reforming and upgrading themselves and would naturally be eliminated.

Each year, one of our coaching staff has an evaluation indicator, which is the amount of teaching work for everyone. The top ones will receive the honorary title. This award is dubbed as the “model worker award”. But this title is not blown out, it is earned by everybody every day and every minute. Shanghai's seaman trainers topped the list of workloads in 1648 hours. They spent 8 hours a day and they had to work for 206 days. No perseverance is impossible.

Training is a process of education. In the short term, it will not see obvious results. Training of trainees will not be immediate. He is in contact with rock climbing today and will be able to climb many difficult routes tomorrow. This is unrealistic. Therefore, we must continue to follow the trainees, develop their interest, and teach them step by step. The development of mountaineering and outdoor sports is very fast. To be a coach at this moment must keep a clear head, keep up with the pace of development, and continuously improve and improve itself to deal with new issues, and use perseverance in exchange for breakthroughs in teaching. The recent running heat, smoking cessation fever, weight loss fever, in fact, nothing can not be done, it depends on perseverance.

9, enterprising

Enthusiasm means that the search for an unknown world is an exploration spirit, and climbing itself needs such a spirit to support it. Napoleon once said such a sentence: Enterprising spirit is an extremely rare virtue, showing that aggressiveness is a prerequisite for one's progress.

Coaches can not meet the status quo, behind closed doors, with enterprising spirit, in order to continue to broaden their unknown areas, so that their understanding of knowledge is not one-sided, not isolated. Dr. Ma is still learning about outdoor leisure. Outdoor instructor Zhang Yanjie will come to NOLS for further study. The rescue coach noodle also actively participates in the rope and rescue courses organized around the country. They are coaches around us and they are examples for us to learn.

With an enterprising spirit, people also have a great spirit, because your blood is filled with a kind of upward power, which cannot be replaced by anything. Edison said: "The size of success is not measured by the height of life achieved by this person, but by the number of obstacles that he overcomes on the road to success." Therefore, if there is no enterprise, it will be impossible to overcome difficulties. The status quo, the past and the past, and the lack of progress in teaching. As a coach, you must maintain your sharpness before you can pass on positive energy to the students. Otherwise, it is a serious misunderstanding.

We will arrange continuing education training for coaches every year, but this is far from meeting actual needs. I also need to develop the habit of reading, and I will be a little bit accustomed to it every day. I will be surprised by my own progress in a year.

10, the transformation of the heart
Transformation is to break old ideas and ideas and build ideas and methods that are in line with development. The outdoor sports are changing with each passing day, and the crowds participating in outdoor sports are constantly changing, so that everyone's outdoor views, values, etc. will be different. Coaching is not only to guide everyone, but also to make themselves more involved in this big family.

The present age of the digital age requires that the curriculum be attractive and bright, while not exaggerating. To do this, no point in reforming the heart is not enough. Some people have studied that before the eighteenth century, the pace of knowledge renewal doubled in about 90 years; since the 1990s, the rate of knowledge renewal has doubled to 3-5 years. In the past 50 years, human society has created more knowledge than the combined total of the past 3000 years. If the coach does not work hard to improve all aspects of knowledge literacy, and does not take the initiative to accelerate knowledge updating, optimize knowledge structure, broaden horizons and horizons, it will be even more difficult to lead students to master knowledge and technology.

Nowadays, if you teach rock climbing, you need to master the subject knowledge of sports training, physiology, biochemistry, nutrition, etc. If you teach outdoors, you must know the content of geographical meteorology, medical history and other fields; teaching leader art, management, organizational behavior Knowledge will fit into your toolbox. These are just knowledge and skills, but also to better pass these things to the students, but also need to have a good communication and expression, classroom management, design and production of courseware lesson plans and so on. Therefore, only continuous transformation can adapt to the new development.

Conclusion: The famous verse written by Liu Yiqing, a literary writer of the Southern Song Dynasty, in the Shi Shuo Xin Yu: “The blind man rides a stable horse and the night comes to a deep pool” has long told us that we must constantly innovate and reform; otherwise, we will walk into the abyss.

With the increase of outdoor population, more and more people realize the importance of learning. The most obvious thing is that everyone pays attention to training. Only last year, the China Board of Trustees launched 103 training sessions of various types, and 4,561 trainees participated in the training. This does not include the various types of social training, youth training, team leader training, and enthusiast training that have emerged gradually. How can we achieve training results? The coach is the core of this. The coach is a cultivating process. It is necessary to continuously learn to improve and improve oneself in order to guarantee the quality of the students.

With these ten hearts and all the coaches who are struggling in the field of outdoor education in our country, we are all together!
