Stunning 3D printed diorama

A few decades before the advent of the film, there was a similar invention that was popular as a form of entertainment, and that was the diorama. This is an interesting device for creating motion artifacts through a rotating device and a series of still pictures. Today, 200 years after the invention of the diorama, a contemporary media artist revives it in a cool way.

The artist is Akinori Goto from Japan, who created a modern version of the diorama using 3D design and 3D printing technology and named it Toki. This impressive installation was recently exhibited at the Spiral Independent Creator Festival and attracted many people's attention. When the light is illuminated from the side by the light, it will show that the ghostly figure is walking or dancing.

In general, a diorama is a series of animation frames placed in a rotating cylinder. This cylinder can be rotated quickly by hand, allowing the animation frames to move quickly, and the animation appears when the human eye views them through the slit. Akinori Goto's diorama, although in a different form, uses the same principles, giving the impression of a dazzling illusion.

To make this 3D printed diorama, Akinori Goto first designed a two-dimensional timeline that corresponds to a person's movements. These successive actions are then subdivided into 6 still images. Then, Akinori Goto transforms the 2D axis into a 3D axis, so a group of consecutive portraits becomes a ring. Next, these images are converted into 3D computer images and adjusted according to the time axis. The shape of a cylindrical drum, and printed in 3D, this device can rotate like a traditional diorama. When the light was projected onto this 3D printed diorama, we saw this walking portrait.

Although Akinori Goto's 3D printed diorama is not the first, we have previously reported other media artists using 3D printing technology to create interesting and unique works. But Akinori Goto's illuminating 3D printed diorama is undoubtedly the most impressive. For its part, its cylindrical sculptural structure has been impressive. Now that it's moving, it's radiant with the light, so that we really see an elf dancing.

It is understood that due to its excellent performance, this 3D printed diorama won the runner-up award and the audience award at the Spiral Independent Creators Festival in Tokyo.
