Japanese new method to synthesize carbon nanotubes with uniform thickness

Xinhua News Agency, Tokyo, May 27 (Reporter Lan Jianzhong) As a next-generation high-tech material, carbon nanotubes have broad application prospects in many fields. However, the diameter and length of carbon nanotubes synthesized by the existing methods are different. A research team at Nagoya University in Japan has developed a new synthesis method that produces very long and uniform carbon nanotubes with the required diameter.

Carbon nanotubes are long, hollow tubes made of a layer of carbon atoms curled. The diameter is usually a few nanometers to tens of nanometers (1 nanometer is one billionth of a meter). Strong and so on.

A research group led by Professor Itami Kenichiro of Nagoya University reported on the 27th of the British "Nature Chemistry" online version that they had developed a circular carbon nanoring in 2009, which is the smallest component of carbon nanotubes. The research team attached the carbon nanoring to the sapphire substrate and heated it to 500 degrees Celsius with ethanol. As a result, the carbon contained in ethanol continues to accumulate on the carbon nanorings, and the higher the stack, the more it becomes cylindrical, thereby producing carbon nanotubes of uniform thickness.

The researchers said that by changing the total amount of ethanol, the length of the carbon nanotubes can be adjusted.

Depending on how the carbon atoms are connected, some carbon nanotubes can conduct electricity like metals, while others have semiconductor properties. The research team plans to improve the synthesis method in the future, not only to make the carbon nanotubes uniform in size, but also to make them metallic and semiconducting.
