EViews Software Series Learning - Basics
What is EViews? EViews is a simple and practical software package for statistical, metrology and economic models. There are three ways to work in EViews software: 1. Graphical user interface (using mouse and menu/dialog) 2. Single command (using the command window) 3. Program file (command combination of scripts executed in batch mode) EViews desktop EViews work files and objects EViews does not open a generic blank file, unlike Word, Excel, etc. EViews documents are also called working files and need to be created instead of generic. These working files contain information such as your data. EViews are object-oriented programs. All objects are related to this particular analysis, such as sequences, groups, equations, drawings, tables, and so on. The working file is the owner of these objects. Object types are distinguished by color code: - yellow icon is a data object - The blue icon is the estimated object - Green icons are view objects (tables, graphics, etc.) Double-click on one of the object icons to open it. Every object has its own menu. When the object is opened, the EViews menu becomes all the functions that represent the object. The objects in the work file show more details. View the "Details" view, click View_Details+/- in the working file or double click The results of the view changes can be seen in this screenshot. Each object has a separate column in the details view. You can double-click on the head of the list to sort by attributes such as name, type, etc. You can resize or drag the list to change their position and width. Object window Sequence object This is the main data object Contains a list of data. When you open a sequence, a spreadsheet view is displayed with the list above showing the data in this sequence. Sequence object (cont'd) Open a sequence 1. Double click on the sequence 2. Once the sequence is open, you can see the active function actions by clicking the View or Proc menu in the working file. If a sequence has only a single column of data, the menu is just a valid operation (view or test) for that column of data. Group object This is a collection of series of objects Contains multiple columns of data. When you open a group, a spreadsheet view is displayed with the number of columns above showing the data for each sequence in the group. Group object (cont'd) Open a group Double click 2. Once the group is open, click on the View or Proc menu to see a list of valid features. Now the operation of multiple data columns is required (views, tests, etc.). Equation object This is a single equation estimation object. In EViews, this is the main estimate. Opening an equation will show the main results of the estimate. Equation object (cont'd) Open an equation object Double click Once the equation is open, click on the View and Proc menus to see the available actions. Some of the features on the View and Proc menus depend on the estimated equation type. View object These objects have data views or estimated objects. The view time used to freeze another object. Create this view 1. Press and hold the Freeze button (such as the gdp sequence) in another object. 2. Save to the working file using the Name button. 3. Click the OK button. command The command panel provides a scrolling command bar for typing commands. You can scroll through the commands you have executed. If you hit the Enter key on any line, EViews will copy the line and the cursor will execute the line again. Command (cont'd) To review the list of previous commands, use the CTRL+UP keys to view them in order. The last line of the command in the list will be displayed in the command window. Hold down the CTRL key while pressing the UP arrow key to display the previous command. To see the last 30 lines of commands, press CTRL+J.
