Competitive Rock Climbing Becomes Official Competition of Tokyo Olympics in 2020

At the 129th plenary session of the International Olympic Committee held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on the 4th, Beijing time, the International Olympic Committee announced the acceptance of competitive climbing for the official 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

“We are very happy to have competitive climbing as a competition event for the Tokyo Olympics. This is our dream. After years of hard work, we have finally succeeded! Thanks to the International Olympic Committee for this unique opportunity for athletic rock climbing!” President of International Sailing Federation Marko · Marco Scolaris said.

It is understood that in September 2014, the International Olympic Committee unanimously agreed to add new projects in the 2020 Olympic Games; a year later, the International Panasonic and the Japanese Mountain Club made presentations on the climbing project to the International Olympic Committee in Japan. Eight projects were on the waiting list; in June this year, the IOC Executive Committee decided to package the five projects of baseball, karate, skateboarding, athletic climbing and surfing to the 129th Plenary Session of the International Olympic Committee.

Today, the International Olympic Committee unanimously agreed that the five sports will be the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Li Zhixin, vice president of the International Swinging Association and Chairman of the China Mountaineering Association, said: First of all, climbing into the Olympic Games and becoming an Olympic project is a very good opportunity for the Chinese climbing sport. This opportunity is reflected in the greater stage we will have. More social resources to promote rock climbing development. Rock climbing is a fashion sport that is very popular with teenagers. There is no doubt that climbing into the Olympics will receive strong support from the government, enterprises and even families. In addition, we will lay a solid foundation for our work and focus on strengthening the popularization of young people. In recent years, the China Mountaineering Association has hosted competitions and selections of rock climbing hope stars throughout the country, and has been promoting rock climbing into campus activities. To develop a rock climbing campaign is not only to compete for gold and win glory for the country, but also to play a powerful role in leading the development of the sports industry and promoting social progress.

Competitive climbing reflects the core values of the Olympic Movement: higher, faster, and stronger. This is an exciting and healthy project that has been practiced on five continents. Women, young people, including people with disabilities, can participate in this sport. Competitive rock climbing is increasingly popular, and many high-level athletes come from the host country, Japan.

“We are honored to add elements of verticality to the Olympic Movement. ISF will continue to work hard with our athletes, national organizations and partners to make athletic rock climbing an important sport.” Secretary of the International Panzer Climbing Association Debra Gawrych said.

Although the International Olympic Committee has accepted competitive climbing as an Olympic event, the work of the International Panzer Union is far from complete and many preparations are still needed. According to reports, the International Panasonic will study the form of competitive climbing on the Olympics from a technical perspective. The draft will be presented at the International Pantade Plenary in Quebec, Canada, on March 11, 2017. ISU will also work closely with the International Olympic Committee and the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee 2020 to determine the details of the venue and the construction of the rock walls, and strive to fully demonstrate the charm of competitive rock climbing in Tokyo.

Marco Scalaris said: “We have captured the last fulcrum of this incredible 'climbing', but the next 'climbing' is still waiting for us. Our team is preparing for the Olympic Games. In the next four years, we will continue to work under the leadership of the International Olympic Committee!"
