Agarwood is not agarwood

Incense and tea cooking, paintings and flower arrangements are collectively referred to as the literati's four arts, which are the esoterics pursued by literati in the past. In recent years, the beauty of Agarwood has made more and more people feel excited, want to play incense or collect incense, but it has stopped because of its "mystery." Recently, the author visited Mr. Wang Jinli, the fourth generation descendant of the Shenxiang family, in the No. 8 Mansion, and found answers to some questions in the hearts of many days.

Agarwood is part of the agarwood tree. When the agarwood tree is damaged by natural or man-made damage, the wound is diseased and the secreted resin precipitates, forming agarwood. However, there are a lot of fakes on the market that are agarwood processing. According to Mr. Wang, the difference in price between real and fake agarwood can reach dozens of times, and the fake agarwood with a price of up to 10,000 yuan may be “the cost of wood is at most tens of yuan”. In response to this phenomenon, Mr. Wang pointed out the method of identification. First of all, from the visual point of view, the color of the agarwood is darker, mostly yellowish brown, and the spots and textures are more obvious. The agarwood is white in color, light in weight and unclear in texture. The most striking difference between the two is that the oil line unique to Aquilaria is not found in agarwood. Secondly, in the sense of smell, the "scented aroma" made from pigments, flavors and chemical adhesives has a pungent and strong taste. The "cool" taste that is unique to medicine and alcohol is far less gentle and elegant than agarwood.

As far as the place of origin is concerned, there are also great differences in the quality of “domestic incense” and “foreign incense”. China's agarwood production areas are mainly distributed in eastern Guangdong and Fujian, and are also produced in Guangxi and Xishuangbanna, Yunnan. “Foreign incense” is mainly produced in Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia and other countries. Both have different scent and shape. In terms of shape, the "domestic incense" in the early years has different forms such as strips, blocks, and sheets, which are larger than the "foreign fragrance", while the "foreign fragrance" is less stripy and blocky. The difference in scent is even more pronounced. "Foreign incense" has a high content of fat and oil, and the smell is relatively strong, but some will slightly nose, or always have an odor. In contrast, the fragrance of “domestic fragrance” should be stable and long-lasting. When burning, there will be no greasy and disgusting feelings brought by some “foreign fragrance”. In general, the highest oil content is agarwood from Indonesia and Malaysia, and the color is darker. In terms of taste, "domestic incense" is bitter, the smell is very strong, and some even produce spicy and numbing flavors, but "returning sweet" is very good. The "foreign fragrance" is generally sweeter to eat, and the bitter taste is lighter. It can hardly eat spicy and numbing. In general, “domestic incense” has a low yield and a long period of formation; while “foreign incense” has a short formation time and a high yield. The differences in the genus have caused a lot of opinions on the value of agarwood. "Some say that it is the best in Vietnam, and some say it is the best in Hainan." Mr. Wang believes that the value of agarwood is not scientific according to the division of production areas. Depending on the quality and personal preference, “Every production area has a good agarwood. The length of time and the high oil content are the criteria for judging. Generally speaking, the agarwood for decades and hundreds of years is very good.”

In addition to traditional medicinal aromas and religious fragrances, "fragrance seats" and "fragrance" are increasingly used by people. The so-called "fragrance seat" is a kind of cultural activity that achieves the "goods" of the "goods" through incense and touches the senses. And "drinking incense" can achieve the effect of calming the mind and calming the mind. Mr. Wang pointed out that when brewing, the agarwood has higher water temperature requirements than the average tea, so it is best to use the method of cooking to "carry out the fragrance." Generally speaking, "a few grams of agarwood can be used for more than a year."

Mr. Wang pointed out that due to the lack of complete understanding and thorough understanding of the history and formation of Aquilaria, the agarwood market has the phenomenon that merchants use the aroma of agarwood to make up stories and make famous names. “White sand sinking” and “tiger skin grain” are all Examples are worthy of the attention of the majority of collectors.
